Important wins for Red Star, Kazan, Partizan
| | Wednesday 09 January 2013, 17:28 | | | Tim Hartog |
The first results of a busy Champions League night, day 7 in the preliminary round, traditionally came from Eastern Europe where Sintez Kazan gained three important points in their group C matchup with French side CN Marseille beating the visitors 11-9, thanks to four goals by Marko Kuc. Two goals each by Nicolas Constantin-Bicari, Thibaut Simon and Mickael Bodegas for Marseille could not help as the home team decided the game in the fourth quarter outscoring their opponents 3-1 for the two-goal victory. The lower-ranked match in group A between Georgian national champs Ligamus Tbilisi and German representative Waspo '98 Hannover ended in a tied game 6-6. The Germans used the final eight minutes to levell the score and collect their fourth point of this campaign after having beaten Ligamus at home in their previous meeting.
Big triumph for Red Star in group B second place race
The important meeting in group B where Red Star Belgrade played host to Greek runner-up Olympiakos Piraeus was won by the home team with the minimal margin they needed in order to jump over their opponent two second place in the ranking of the group. After the 9-8 defeat in their first meeting, in Greece, the Serbs needed a two-goal or more win at home to keep Olympiakos behind them on the table. And they succeeded although a 6-2 lead at half time was cut down to just a two-goal advantage at the start of the final quarter. Red Star though managed to maintain that difference and took an important 11-9 win. An internesting and close final phase is what probably will follow in group B where Olympiakos has two games left to get six needed points while Red Star will be in action in all three remaining rounds to stay in second place.
Possible key-victory for Partizan
Partizan gained a big win in group D in their second head-to-head duel with group leader Szeged. After the close 8-7 defeat in Hungary in their previous matchup Partizan knew they needed a win by two goals or more. But things did not looked so bright at the start of the match as coach Vujasinovic saw his first two centers both being unavailable due to a suspension (Vukicevic) and illness (Filipovic). The young team, playing with their home crowd behind them, did manage to deliver at key moments beating Szeged 8-6 in a tense encounter to hold the opportunity of finishing on top in group D alive. The final phase of the game was Partizan's strongest. A 4-6 deficit was turned around into the final score lead courtesy of four straight goals, two by Milos Cuk while Stefan Mitrovic and youngster Dusan Mandic delivered the daggers. The Hungarians, who suffered their first loss this season, still lead the way but can not make any more mistakes if they wanna keep hold of the top spot ahead of the next round.
Jug cruises past Montpellier
Group B dominator and title contender Jug Dubrovnik faced little trouble at home against reigning French champs Montpellier walking away to a 17-5 blowout win. Just like the 2-14 win in France, a twelve-goal difference was displayed thirty-two minutes of play. USA-captain Tony Azevedo, ahead of leaving off to Calgary, Canada for the American continental 2013 World Championships qualification tournament, scored a game-high four goals while Aleksandar Ivovic netted three. Things in the group were not expected to change after this match outcome as Jug will have an expected easy mission in the next round against Swiss representative Kreuzlingen on January 23, while Montpellier is more or less sure of its fourth place in the group knowing they will advance to the round of last sixteen but are likely to face a tough opponent.
Eger withstands final-minute storm to beat Vouliagmeni
The big matchup in group A between ZF-Eger and Greek champion Vouliagmeni turned into a real nailbiter. After the home side led 6-4 at halftime, their opponents struck back in the third quarter eventually tying the game at 8. In a close and tense final eight minutes center Lukas Seman put Eger up 9-8 but Alexandros Gounas netted his second to bring his team back to a tied score 9-9. It was Zsolt Varga who turned out to be the match winner scoring but things got tricky in the final seconds as Vouliagmeni got a shot off by Christos Afroudakis in the final seconds before that goal was declined by the referees as the Greece international had to inbound the ball and was not allowed to shoot. Zsolt Varga, Ferenc Salamon and Canada international Kevin Graham all scored two goals. Greek standout Christos Afroudakis led the way for Vouliagmeni netting three. With the win the Hungarians seem to be back in business in group A having an interesting final three games to play including a matchup with Spartak Volgograd in what could turn out to be the battle for second place in the group.
Barceloneta shakes off Brescia in final phase
Comfortable group C leading side and Spanish reigning champion Barceloneta played a tough match against Brescia, after having won the first meeting in Italy 5-7. The game was well-balanced for most of the time although the initiative was with the home team. After a 7-5 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, Alessandro Nora netted one to get the Italians back within one goal (7-6) before the Spanish stars Felipe Perrone and Marc Minguell decided the game in Spanish favor scoring two consecutive goals for the 9-6 lead and virtual victory with just under four minutes remaining in the game. When Marko Elez struck (9-7) time had already run out as the final thirteen seconds were played out by Barceloneta who remained undefeated and more or less ensure first place in the group. Brescia meanwhile is facing two tough final prelims games against Marseille, at home, and Vojvodina in Serbia to make the most out of it and possibly grab second place.

Champions League prelims set for decisive phase
WaterpoloWorld | | | Tuesday 08 January 2013, 11:55 | | | Tim Hartog |
With the new year just a little over a week old, the first Champions League game day in 2013, the prelims seventh round overall, will be played on Wednesday. And with four or less games left it is crunch times in all four groups who all feature unbeaten sides that lead the group with an unbeaten record but the races for the seedings behind the top teams is exciting. In group A the top matchup between ZF-Eger and group leader Vouliagmeni looks to be promosing. The Hungarian home team will be looking to bounce back from a 11-8 loss on day 4 in Greece and keep the pressure on Spartak Volgograd, the now number two on the table. The Russians will host Dutch champion Schuurman BZC and will be the favorites to win, ahead of the much anticipated game against Eger, scheduled for day 9, to be played on February 6. The third match in group A features the Georgian national champion Ligamus Tbilisi facing off against Waspo '98 Hanover from Germany. The home team looks to get its first points of the season after they suffered a little surprising 7-5 defeat in the meeting between the two sides in Germany.
Emmanouil Mylonakis tallied three goals to the 11-8 win over Eger on day 4. Can the Greek repeat that triumph?
The situation behind the dominating side of Jug Dubrovnik in group B is still interesting as well. After the clear defeat that Olympiakos Piraeus, the current number two in the group, suffered in a head-to-head duel with Jug on day 6, the Greek can now focus on getting their hands on second place in order to be in a good position for the next round. But Red Star Belgrade and Montpellier Waterpolo are just three points behind. That might chance though after Wednesday as Red Star, the current leader of the Serbian league, will host Olympiakos Piraeus in what seems to be a game for second place in the group because Montpellier will have the daunting task of facing Jug in their home pool in Gruz, Dubrovnik. Red Star lost the first meeting with Olympiakos Piraeus in Greece 9-8 on day 4 suffering from five goals by Spanish lefthander Blai Mallarach while Montpellier hopes to get a better result then the 14-2 final score that was on the scoreboard on November 14. Day 8 will feature a head-to-head duel between Montpellier and Red Star so winning against Olympiakos on Wednesday will have the Serbs still open with all possibilities of reaching the round of last sixteen in second place out of group B.
Andrija Prlainovic and Red Star will be looking to translate their recent good form into getting points in the Champions League, starting against Olympiakos on Wednesday
A similair, maybe even more tense sight when looking at group C. Barceloneta, celebrating its 100-year anniversary, played one less game than the other contenders but looks already ensured of the first place while the four other teams all collected six points after five game played. The Spanish group leader is back in action after two rounds off as they host Italian national cup finalist Brescia. The first game between the two sides finished in a 5-7 victory, thanks to a better first half by the Spaniards but it was the closest one of the teams got to Barceloneta. And with three games left in the prelims Brescia knows it has to collect some points in order to get away from the last placed they are occupying now. The other game will be played in Russia where Sintez Kazan will be looking to shake off French runners-up Marseille. Gaining a nice 8-13 win in France on day 4 against Marseille, the Russians know they can keep the French side below them in the rankings when winning again on Wednesday. Ten of the thirteen goals scored came from both Konstantin Stepanyuk and Marko Kuc. If they are on target again at home, good things could happen for Sintez.
Brescia is in need of points and could use one of many strong offensive performances by their top shooter Christian Presciutti when facing Barceloneta
Group D is yet another example of a close and evenly matched bunch of teams where Hungarian national cup winner Szeged already gained a clear advantage but the rest of the teams are still in the middle of a heaten battle for the best possible seeding ahead of the next round. Day 7 will feature a top matchup as Partizan Belgrade will host the group leading and unbeaten side of Szeged in an attempt to get some revanche for the narrow 8-7 loss that Partizan suffered in Hungary on November 14. Szeged, leading the Hungarian league in convincing fashion, is having a successful season so far while Partizan appears to be the current number three in the domestic league of Serbia. It will be interesting to see if the Serbs, traditionally strong at home, will be able to shake off Szeged this time. Meanwhile in Istanbul, Turkey the Turkish defending champion Galatasaray takes on the Romanian champ Oradea. The Romanians, already holding a two-point advantage over Galatasaray in advance of Wednesday's meeting could do a good job winning again in Turkey regarding to ensuring third place. Meanwhile their Turkish opponent acknowledge it is crunch time and knows that the third spot in group D could be their own when beating Oradea.
Can the talented driver Stefan Mitrovic step up for Partizan in the big matchup with Szeged?
