Champions League day 6

A superior third quarter and a game-high five goals by Marton Szivós have given Szeged an 11-8 victory over Turkish national champion Galatasaray Istanbul in the Champions League prelims group D on Tuesday. The home team now holds a commanding lead in the group and remained unbeaten this season. Serbian centre-forward Slobodan Nikic and Josip Sutalo netted two each for the Turkish side that will now enter a tough final group stage phase battling for the three remaining spots in the group behind the recent Hungarian national cup winner in order to reach the round of last sixteen. The remainder of the matches of day 6 in the Champions League were played on Wednesday. In group B Jug Dubrovnik more or less claimed group victory beating Olympiakos, their main rival, in convincing fashion. The Greeks, playing at home, managed to just score two goals as the Croatian national champs routed to a seven-goal victory 9-2. Aleksandar Ivovic (pictured) netted a game-high four goals. The other Greek participant, Vouliagmeni, reached more sucess on day 6. Last placed Ligamus Tbilisi was trashed 16-2 in the group A matchup as the Greek national champion now holds a commanding lead in the group. Brescia reached an important win in group C as they took on Russian opponent Sintez Kazan at home. The first meeting between the two sides ended with a final score of 9-4, but Brescia returned the favor in Italy on Wednesday running out to a 16-12 victory to stay in the race for second place in the group. Christian Presciutti sparked his team on offence scoring five goals. The situation in group C is getting rather excited. Vojvodina Novi Sad, the last team at three points before day 6 made a great comeback at home against French runners-up Marseille after trailing 2-5 at half time to win 10-9 and create a situation in which all teams after Barceloneta have six points. In group B French reigning champion Montpellier secured a spot in the next round beating Swiss side Kreuzlingen in Switzerland 6-14 for their second straight win. The roles in group A seem clear after the sixth round as last season's Hungarian runners-up ZF-Eger rolled to a clear 6-17 win in Nijverdal, Netherlands against Dutch champs Schuurman BZC while Spartak Volgograd had equally less difficulties to overcome their opponent as home side Waspo '98 Hannover in Germany could score just two goals in a 2-12 defeat.

Champions League day 6

Waterpolo World | Tuesday 18 December 2012, 11:44 | Tim Hartog
The sixth day in the Champions League preliminary round can turn out to be a pivotal one for multiple teams. In group C two key-matchups for the battle for a good classification behind group leaders Barceloneta are scheduled as Brescia host Russian side Sintez Kazan who surprised the Italians winning 9-4 in Russia three weeks ago. Vojvodina Novi Sad faces French national runners-up Marseille in a rematch of the previous round's 13-7 victory for the French squad. The first game of the sixth round will be played on Tuesday already as a red-hot unbeaten Szeged team will host Turkish national champion Galatsaray Istanbul in group D. A tough task for the Turks who are still in third place but know that both contenders DiGi Oradea and German champs Spandau Berlin will meet in Romania on Wednesday. The first game between these two sides ended in a 15-13 victory for the Germans, their first of the tournament. Meanwhile in group B, Croatian powerhouse Jug Dubrovnik will be looking to seal the deal in their group as they travell to Athens, Greece to take on Olympiakos. Being their main chaser with just three points less than the Croats a win on Wednesday could virtually get them the group win with still three games left. In group A current Hungary's number two ZF-Eger visit the Netherlands to battle Dutch champion Schuurman BZC and will look to claim the third spot in group A in advance of their big matchup with undefeated group leader Vouliagmeni on day 7. The Greek side will host Georgian representative and last placed Ligamus Tbilisi while Germany's number three Waspo Hannover are up for a tough game against Spartak Volgograd from Russia, currently second seed in the group. The Russians overpowered Hannover 12-4 on day 5.
