2012 FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships
Perth (AUS)

Italy hangs on for Gold medal in amazing final game
| | Sunday 09 December 2012, 03:09 | | | Tim Hartog | Waterpolo World |
The final day of the World Youth Championships is all about classification. The day and tournament will be concluded by both the women's and men's final. First up was home side Australia who battled USA for a seventh place finish and hung on for the close 5-4 win. It was a low scoring affair between two sides that clearly suffered from playing their seventh game in nine days as goals seemed costly. Nevertheless it was Australia who struck first and struck good as they netted the first three goals of the game to take a 3-0 lead in the third quarter before the North Americans got up on the scoreboard with Ryder Robert netting an extra man possession from the right corner. By then the Aussies had opened up a comfortable lead as Ciaran Wolohan, captain Matthew Perrott and Davis Verboon scored one each in the first and second quarter. The final term though saw USA coming back to levell three all by goals of Patrick Fellner on the fastbreak and a nice shot by Kent Inoue against the Australian zone defence. Then Gordon Marshall got involved. The centre-forward scored twice for the home side including the winner with under three minutes to go quickly finishing off a self-earned kickout in front of goal. In between Chandler Jarrels Stickney was successful from the post on man-up but USA just fell short and finished a dissapointing tournament in eighth place.
Greece rolls past satisfied Romanian squad
The game for fifth place was just a game for one half. Greece prooved in better condition and outplayed the Romanians, who looked happy with their nice sixth place finish anyway, in a one-sided second half on their way to a 14-5 victory. After a slow start from both sides the game opened up in the second period that featured seven goals but saw Romania not coming closer on their 3-1 deficit. The tight Greek defence caused trouble for the tired looking Romanians who seemed unable to find a solution and saw Greece extending their two-goal first period lead with one more to lead 7-4 at half time. Fastbreaks and well played man-ups by Greeks did most of the damage to the Romanian team that looked satisfied after half time scoring just one goal, in the fourth quarter on man-up as Greece could easily roll to the nine-goal win to finish in fifth place on the tournament while Romania takes sixth place.
First lead of the game gets Serbia thrilling 8-7 win for Bronze medal
The match for the men's Bronze medal went on to be a thrilling encounter between Serbia and Croatia, both after heartbraking losses in the semi-finals yesterday. Croatia looked the stronger side, especially in the first half, but a tough Serbian side placed a great comeback and ultimately took the much celebrated 8-7 victory.
It was Croatia who looked favorite for the win for most of the match as they jumped out to a 0-2 lead scoring two goals on well-played extra man attacks, finished by Slavko Calic and lefthander Luka Lozina. In the second quarter Serbia pulled one back as Dorde Tanaskovic scored on an extra-man possession for the 1-2 score at half time.
The game and scoring broke loose in the third quarter as Croatia extended its lead up to 1-4 on two consecutive goals, including a penalty, by Antun Goreta but came back again as finishing two man-up courtesy of Ognjen Stojanovic and Nikola Jaksic. The scoring remained waivy as Croatia took a 3-6 lead, once again convertin on both a man-up and penalty but then Serbia managed to levell the score at six scoring three goals in a row with the equalizer being one of the highlights of the match. Serbian captain Dusan Mandic got a free throw on just over five meters away from the goal and scored beatifully with a backhand shot, for the second time this tournament. Croatia got more and more difficulties getting through the tight Serbian defence that guarded and neutralized centre-forward Marino Divkovic quite well. But the Croatians managed to score anyway. A fastbreak by Deni Saric was stopped as the Serbian goalie Milan Vitorovic came out and caused a penalty, converted by Goreta for his third goal of the game to get Croatia up 6-7 with three minutes to go.
It took the Serbs almost two minutes to respond but that rebound prooved decisive. Sixteen-year old Ognjen Stojanovic came up huge scoring two straight goals in two minutes time to give his team the 8-7 lead with just over a minute to play. A tense final phase of the game followed with both sides getting opportunities to score. After Jaksic missed from the post on an extra man possession with just ten seconds remaining, the Croatians took a time-out and had an ultimate opportunity for the equalizer. Their first attempt, from Lozina was saved by Serbian-goalie Vitorovic but still just over a second was left. The corner throw in front of an overcrowded Serbian goal could net Croatia tipping the ball in as Serbia held on for the thrilling win.

Russia takes women's Bronze medal after crazy final quarter comeback
The women's Bronze medal match between Russia and the USA caused an equal amount of excitement altough it did not looked to go that way at first. The game was very close from start to finish but ended with a crazy fourth quarter in which Russia managed turnaround a deficit from the third quarter in winning the game 13-12 on a goal by Daria Ryzhkova with just over a minute remaining in the game. It was the third consecutive goal for the Russians in a 3-0 fourth quarter run after USA had initially netted the 10-12 by Makenzie Fischer early in the period.
The US-women had taken the first step in on a nice effort in the second quarter taking the lead, including a two-goal advantage, twice and continued to be on the good side of the score in third quarter building up to an 8-11 score with under three minutes to go in the third. But the tough Russians came back scoring twice in a row netting the 10-11 by game's top scorer and standout Elvina Karimova who scored her fifth of six goals of the match.
It seemed not enough as USA responded netting one by Fischer with just under seven minutes remaining before Russia made a great comeback rewarded with the Bronze medal as Ryzhova scored the prooved winner. Both teams got chances but were defended very well as Russia hung on and started celebrating after a ultimate sequence in which the US-women could not get a shot off in the dying seconds, heavily defended by the Russians.
Greece takes well-deserved women's Gold medal after clear final win over Hungary
The Gold medal won by Greece could not be more deserved. After a dominating performance beating USA in the semi-final, Hungary could not get past the tight and well-organised defence in the final as the Greek women defeated Hungary 9-5. Again the Greek effort and performance looked superior over their opponents' shutting down the Hungarian offence in the first half while starting well with scoring three goals devided over two quarters as the final saw a comfortable Greek advantage halfway throught the second term.
That lead was even extended before half time as three goals by the Greek got them up 2-6 in what looked a dominant performance. It turned out to be altough Hungary managed to score four goals in the second half but got more and more frustrated by the fact that it did not brought them any closer to the Greeks as the Georgios Morfesis-coached side answered right back, until the final two Hungary goals in the fourth quarter. It turned out to be just a good as possible finish for Hungary who got beaten by a better side and had to settle for the Silver medal. Both Eleftheria Plevritou and Stefania Charalampidi scored a game-high three goals each for the Gold medallists.
Italy claims men's Gold medal after crazy final beating Hungary 10-8
Simply amazing. That's how the World Youth Championships in Perth, Australia finished on Sunday. The men's final between Hungary and Italy turned out to be a thrilling, controversial, incredible final with the Italians finishing on top 10-8 to claim the Gold medal.
Twenty major fouls and two red cards for Hungary (and seventeen major fouls and two red cards for Italy) caused starting goalie David Gyorgy to changed his red cap into a white one in order to keep the field players at six in a crazy final quarter that featured two decisive goals by Italians Andrea Fondelli and Luca Cupido, his fourth of the game, to reach the 8-10 win.
As a final should be, the conclusion of the tournament featured a very close encounter between two well-performing sides that had a flying start scoring a combined seven goals in the opening quarter that saw Hungary leading 4-3 after the first eight minutes. Hungary's centre-forward, and tournament's Most Valuable Player Toni Nemet, netted his second of the game in the second period to get Hungary up 5-3 before Italy used the session to score three consecutive goals and came all the way back to lead 5-6 at half time. The game's top scorer Luca Cupido was responsible for two straight ones in this run scoring off a free throw and man-up to lead Italy in their comeback.
Things got tense in the second half as fewer goals were scored due to excellent defence by both sides. Krisztian Manhercz scored one for Hungary but saw Italy regaining the lead before the quarter was finished as Alessandro Velotto scored his second of the game with two seconds remaining. What marked this period though were the two exclusion for both Tamas Sedlmayer and Szilard Jansik for Hungary. Sedlmayer got his third major foul shortly after having received his second whereafter Hungary had survived the man-down possession. Sedlmayer heavily reacted and his teammate on the bench did so even more leading to two red cards.
Italy looked to benefit from the growing frustration on the Hungarian side scoring 6-8 in the fourth quarter as Umberto Esposito tipped in a rebound from a shot that come off the crossbar on man-up. But Hungary was not to give up. Having trouble scoring in the second half it was Bendeguz Szabo who finally netted one with just over a minute and a half remaining in the game as he struck after a first extra man attempt miss. It took Italy just half a minute to react. Andrea Fondelli was successful from the left corner on man-up after shooter Balint Lorincz had received his third major foul that caused goalie Gyorgy to change the colour of his cap. It was Hungary's Toni Nemet who brough some confidence and believe back scoring on man-up with fifty seconds remaining but it turned out to be too late. Italy showed no remorse delivering the dagger with twenty seconds left as Luca Cupido scored his fourth goal of the game off a free throw as the shotclock expired. The remaining time brought a tense sequence in which Hungary did not managed to score as Italy started celebrating their unbelievable victory.
