1/4 Finals Euro Cup 16/12/15

Kazan, Marseille to decide close series

The biggest battle in the Euro Cup quarterfinals can expected to be fought in Kazan, Russia. Here next to the place of the temporary venue for the 2015 World Championships water polo tournament, Sintez Kazan hosts Marseille defending just a 1-goal lead out of the leg 1 encounter. Here the Russians got away from France with an 8-9 victory, and although good for their confidence, both teams will realise the difference is tight and the return match on Wednesday will determine who is to advance to the semifinals.
Elsewhere the situations are different, mainly because the results in leg 1 were with a greater difference in the final score. Brescia will host Kirishi but is virtually sure of making it to the semis after having won the match in Russia 5-11 a month ago. Szeged surprised by dominating Champions League round 3 loser Waspo 98 Hannover at home as they rolled to a 9-3 victory but should be focussed on maintaining the advantage when playing in Germany on Wednesday as Waspo will go all-in. The same goes for Mornar who travel to Oradea. Last year's semifinalists Mornar defeated Champions League loser Oradea 14-9 in game 1 but, although a tough one for the Romanians, know that the overall win is far from being a done deal.

EuroCup 1/4 Final 11/11/15

First-half domination gets Brescia close to Euro Cup semis

Strong defence led to a dominating first-half showing by AN Brescia in Kirishi as the Italian runner-up virtually secured a spot in the Euro Cup semifinals on Wednesday. The quarterfinals leg 1 meeting between Brescia and Kinef Kirishi saw the first seven goals of the game being scored by the visitors from Italy before the home side could respond. Although in the second half the deficit was trimmed to six goals in the end, Brescia are in the driver's seat with leg 2 at home coming up in four weeks time.
Waspo 98 Hannover suffered a heavy defeat in Szeged where the home team put up a tight defence which held the Germans away from the goal. And with proven shooters such Aleksandar Radovic and Erik Bukowski not on target, the game was a tough one for the visitors. Home side Szeged meanwhile countered away to a quick comfortable lead (4-1) after the opening quarter and held control throughout. Zsolt Varga led the way scoring 4 goals for the Hungarians who will travel to Germany for leg 2 with great confidence knowing the 6-goal difference is a large advantage to build upon, even when playing away in leg 2.

Mornar made a good call by beating CSM Oradea 14-9 at home. The Croats, semifinalists last year, got away from their opponent in the third period taking a 7-4 lead. That proved vital in the remainder as Oradea did managed to score their goals. A number of 6 which would easily have made it as a 'comeback' in most cases, but suffered from their 3-goal deficit as Mornar kept scoring as well and therewith maintained their advantage, and even got it to 5 in the end. That forms an excellent basis with leg 2 in Romania to be played. For CSM Oradea it will be all or nothing at home in 4 weeks time.

Champions League and EuroCup 2015-2016 draw

Repetitions for three teams in both groups

Dubrovnik, home of Jug, one of the most decorated clubs in European water polo, hosted the draw for the Champions League preliminaries. This time the eight wild card-holder sides waited the outcome in excitement.
Before the draw was made, representatives of the clubs gathered for a meeting where they discussed how the world’s most prestigious water polo club competition can be further improved. LEN Sports&Office Manager Marco Birri has praised the joint efforts of the clubs and LEN to lift the level of the Champions League and its environment.
Live TV-coverage of almost each game in the prelims, special branding in the pools, dedicated website with live scoring and better media services were all contributed to the growing popularity of the Champions League. “These parts have all become essential in the League, now we have a firm base to move forward and to make the Champions League even more successful” Marco Birri said.
The third season, run in the new format, will again see 10 rounds in the preliminaries with the Final Six tournament at the end, this time hosted by Budapest, again in the Mecca of water polo, on the Margaret Island (where last year’s European Championships were also staged). This year Hungary’s wild-card holder Eger enjoys the benefits of automatic qualification for the F6, however, they insisted on attempting to make the finals by finishing in the top 3 of their group.
In fact they face a tough but manageable task: just as in the last occasion, they will meet Barceloneta (ESP) and Olympiacos (GRE) and this time Spandau is also part of this group. The other has Pro Recco (ITA), Jug (CRO), Partizan (SRB) and Galatasaray (TUR) – that last three also battled hard for the qualifying spots in the previous season.
There was a change among the wild card-holder sides: Brescia gave up the opportunity to start in the prelims as they are building a brand new team with plenty of youngsters. Italy’s wild card was offered for the Champions League title-holder Pro Recco which accepted it, this is why Recco already appears in the draw.
The Champions League season kicks off in the first weekend of September with Round 1 of the qualifications. Two more stages will follow, the four winning sides of Round 3 will join the eight wild card-holders. The first round of the prelims is due on 28 October while the Final Six is scheduled for 2-4 June 2016.
The draw for the Euro Cup’s first qualification round was also made in Dubrovnik. Interestingly, the two Hungarian participants and the two Russian sides were drawn together in the respective groups.

Euro Cup draw

Next to the Champions League draw for the preliminary phase, the draw for the first qualification round of the Euro Cup tournament was held in Dubrovnik on Wednesday. Here last year's runner-up Acquachiara is present already now in their attempt of again making it to the final, this time to win it after last year's unique all-Naples battle was lost to rivals Posillipo. In group A Acquachiara will find opponents from Germany (Esslingen), Montenegro (Primorac), Hungary (FTC), Croatia's Jadran Split, Strasbourg from France and rebuilding Hungarian side Szeged. Meanwhile in group B interesting battles can expected as Croatia's Mornar, semifinalist last year, meet Sintez Kazan from Russia, France's outsider Olympic Nice, Dutch newcomer Widex GZC Donk, Canottieri Napoli and a second Russian participant in Kinef Kirishi. Playing dates and schedule will be announced later.
